Today we held our Year 5 and 6 Community day. It was a chance for us to share all we have learnt in our Hapori Whanui inquiry. In Room 4 we have been looking European communities. According to our definition a community is a group of people who have things in common or share interests and qualities for example language, food, clothing, celebrations and symbols. So we created some games to teach other children about the flags, foods, greetings and celebrations. Heres some photos of what we made.

Wednesday 5th April was the start of the Gold Coast Commonwealth games so to celebrate Halsey Drive held its own Commonwealth sports day. We found 6 sports played by countries in the commonwealth and we learnt how to play them. Competing in our houses we played the games against other teams to find an overall commonwealth champion. Here is a video of our day!
The final results of the day were:
1st Ruru 2
2nd = Pukeko 1 and Tui 1
3rd Tui 2
Congratulations to Ruru for taking out the Dodgeball competition!
Last week the senior school held its Swimming sports. It was a fantastic day with lots of children showing off their skills in the pool. A huge thank you to Glenn Hamblyn for his help and to all the parents who came along and supported the children.
Here is a short video to show some of the action of the day!

Esther’s Crafty World
Living amongst a pile of junk there lives an old lady named Esther. Soundlessly she rummages amongst mountains of trash like a mountaineer trying to climb Mt Everest. People have said that “One man’s trash, is another man’s treasure” but in this case it's a woman's treasure. Ester wears a woollen, lush beanie with a faded red pompom covering her white hair. Perched upon her red, round nose sits pink pair of glasses; there are no lenses in the glasses so she must be wearing it for fashion. Wrapped around her neck is a light faded purple scarf with a small vote badge on it. She wears a red coat over her brown t-shirt. Unlike everybody else’s clothes, hers are ragged and disheveled. Even though she lives in a penniless situation, she is still happy in her creative world.

The Junkyard Grandma
Living in a home of rubbish, Esther scurries through a mountain of ancient junk. She takes stuff people didn't find a use for and makes them her own. Although she's stranded in a junkyard that she calls her home, finding uses for things is Esther’s specialty. Unlike nice clothed grandmas, Esther’s clothes are aged and contaminated. She wears a ragged, leafy, old beanie with a faint red pom-pom on the top. Her glasses that sit on the top of her rudolphie nose are faded pink and have tape around the cracked parts. In fact, there's not even one piece of lenze in them! But Esther doesn't care, she has more on her mind like finding stuff to make her little tent-like home more like a family one.
Esther is a very grand grandma. It was her cool crazy ideas that got her one step further in life.

Congratulations to Kyza who received Edmund Bear last week for his amazing efforts in Writing. Well done Kyza, we are very proud of you! Here is some of the writing Kyza has been working on.
Prologue The Beginning of the Day.
Soohorang was a white tiger with fur as white as the clouds, or as if it was a tiger that been painted by a couple of painters, using black and white. The black stripes were like the darkness of the sky in the night. As Soohorang jumped out of bed, (his white fluffy bed of course), he ran outside feeling so excited. He had been waiting for four years for this day to arrive. Soohorang grabbed his black snowboard with white straps and started to walk to the race. “Towards the elevator” he said to himself, walking to the top of the mountain that looked like it was painted by millions of men when they got lost.
Chapter One : The Beginning of the Journey
As Soohorang waited nervously at the top of the mountain for the snowboarding race to start, the other racers Bandabi and lots of Soohorang’s were also waiting. Soohorangs legs and hands were shaking nervously, like a powerful earthquake . Soohorang felt something loose and the race was about to start, it was his strap on the snowboard that held his feet tightly. Soohorang was extremely nervous , suddenly the race started and Soohorang bent down quickly to tighten his board.
Chapter Two : Beginning of A disaster!
Quickly Soohorang started moving he had to catch up to the other racers. A couple of minutes later he did a 360 degree turn, jumped up and he was back in the race. Soohorang caught some speed, was catching up, he was nearly in front. He saw the racers coming together so close then Soohorang knew that maybe they were going to crash this would be disaster!
Chapter Three : The Fateful Crash
Soohorang made his way slowing down so he wouldn't collide with the group, as they smashed into each other they went flying head first into the ground. Soohorang saw snow firing up into the air like water fountains or volcanos shooting lava from the impact of the collision, into the snowy depths.
Chapter Four : The Relieved tiger
As Soohorang made it to the end with some flips and 360's later he was relieved that he never crashed, instead he got thrown a first place trophy. He Was made champion of the year. As the crowds cheered louder than the last winter olympics he was very impressed with himself as all the people continued shouting his name“Soohorang!! Soohorang!! Soohorang!!”
Chapter Five: The end of the snowboard race
Bandabi and the other Soohorang’s were disappointed with themselves as they made their way to the finish line. They slipped and slided finally hopped on their snowboards and went down the tracks. “MEANWHILE”, Soohorang himself said “well that was a close one I might of crashed!” . Soohorang took his trophy and showed off putting his arms up in the air like he just didn’t care about the race anymore . He stood on tall golden podium with the 1st place sign on the front of it . The crowd was loud and throwing soft toys at Soohorang . The soft toys were Soohorang’s and Bandabi’s. He couldn’t of felt more prouder if he tried.
